Ebay Fallout-New Fees
PowerSeller revolt looms as eBay CEO Donahoe tinkers with business model

Online auctioneer eBay's legions of sellers are digesting the likely fallout from a significant raft of policy and fee changes announced by company CEO John Donahoe today. The quick and dirty version -- kiss the old, quirky fun eBay (EBAY) goodbye and say hello to a site that looks a lot more like Amazon.com. I spoke at length to Ina Steiner, editor of AuctionBytes.com, a noted eBay expert who has been critical of the website at times.
Steiner has a decidedly opinionated take on the likely impact of the changes, which she sees as both carrot and stick. "For companies that are selling one-of-a-kind items such as antiques or rare jewelry, these rules could have a really negative impact," says Steiner. That's because the company will now offer a higher 20% discount on fees paid to eBay for its new Top-Rated Sellers category who have the very best customer ratings, while offering a diminished 5% standard PowerSeller fee discount to longstanding vendors whose customer ratings don't qualify them for the higher discount.
The move underscore the dilemma CEO John Donahoe faces as he tries to move the company away from a maxed-out auction model, to a more staid e-commerce platform without causing faithful eBay sellers to bail out in droves.
The fee discount difference can mean thousands of dollars in extra costs or extra savings for many eBay sellers. To access the newly created Top-Rated Sellers category, eBay merchants must have virtually zero negative feedback ratings from customers. This is not a problem for buyers of items such as electronics or office supplies.
But it will hurt eBay resellers moving quirkier or more unique wares, says Steiner. It's much harder for vendors to move specialty items and avoid all negative feedback. That's due to the inevitable disconnect between buyers' expectations and the reality of their purchases, which many times are not always exactly what they imagined or equal to what they saw in an online photo. For vendors of unique wares, making disgruntled customers happy through discounts or refunds may not be an option. "They want sellers to do what it takes to make a buyer happy. On eBay, that's not always a practical approach," says Steiner. "Sellers who are selling valuable antiques or high value item, its not as easy to say, keep it and I'll refund you because you are complaining."
She also noted that new search results pages on the website will look a lot more like Amazon results pages, with a product description, some product information, and a "buy box" with two or three leading eBay merchants. Links to other eBay merchants will be lower down the page. And, Donahoe has announced that eBay is aggressively moving toward more fixed-price item sales, much like Amazon.
Not that Donahoe has a made a secret of his intentions to abandon eBay's core to become a more polished e-tailer. Donahoe is on a mission to make eBay ubquitous with a massive keyword acquisition strategy to goose search engine results for eBay items. He's going to need all the help he can get if traffic to eBay continues to fall and faithful sellers abandon ship for greener pastures at niche auction and e-tail sights like GoAntiques and Etsy.com. And there is cold comfort in locking horns with Amazon, an online retailer that has increasingly sucked up a larger percentage of the e-tail market. But judging from its recent earnings call, eBay's management team sure seems eager to get into that race.

**The FireWorks are About to Start**
While the 4th of July is over a month away, the Fireworks at BigTicket and BigValue Depot are about to start. As you know or should know we launched the BigTicketDepot store last week. What you don't know is everything else we have been doing which we will soon be announcing. What is happening and more importantly what is about to happen is going to be historical.
YOU as a 300 Elite team member will soon see that you made the right decision to be on this team. Now that both BVD and BTD are live we are ready to unleash everything we have put together for the extensive marketing campaigns which are about to take place.
For the few that didn't believe in our vision and chose to quit, I feel for you more than you know. However my focus is for those that did believe and are here with us TODAY. You have the vision and KNOW that VISION is about to become REALITY.
Mark my words right NOW. BTD and BVD will become a household name for people selling online this year. In my previous communication, I stated you had bought stock in what we are doing with BTD and BVD wether you knew it or not. The online selling market is primed for a new player to come to the table. We already know this through more testing and communication with EBAY sellers than you can imagine. What we have put together with BTD and BVD is the answer they are looking for.
**Question of the Week**
I have received so many incredible emails over the past week since we made the initial announcement that the BTD store was live congratulating us on achieving this historical milestone. I want to thank all of you as you know we have now completed the circle which will now catapult both BVD and BTD into the future.
While we made the BTD store live many of you have emailed me asking if you can market to BTD clients. Well it is official, the Green Light is on. Yes you can promote the BTD store as well as list any BigTicket items you may have to list. We also want your feedback on the BTD store as this will help us with the other many enhancements we are working on.
The bottom line is this. We already know through our initial beta testing of the launch of the BVD store what has been working. Over 900 BVD clients already and we haven't even pushed a fraction of the marketing buttons and tools we are about to enable you with. We will apply all of that to the BTD store and between the two will take the internet selling industry by storm.
**BTD/BVD Support Ticket System**
The new BTD and BVD support ticket system will go live either today or tomorrow. Support for your BTD and BVD clients is going to be vital as we move forward. When we throw the switch there will be a new support Icon in both your BTD and BVD client back office. All BTD and BVD clients will also have this icon which will then take them to the new support ticket system.
We tested multiple support ticket system software applications and believe the one we chose is going to deliver the optimum in support to your BTD/BVD clients.
**Get READY**
We have climbed a mountain to get to where we are at right now. While we have not reached the summit, it is right within our grasp. What we are doing right now will take us to the summit of the mountain. From there we will all prosper as BTD and BVD will continue to climb new mountain peaks.
As you know from our last communication, there are even more announcements we are going to make. I hope you are ready for an upcoming communication from our CEO Joel Sauceda.
